The Week That Was
There are moments during the school year that cause you to reflect and ask, "Did all that really happen?" Last week was one of those weeks. We were a part of history as the town voted to erect a new BMHS that will take us well into the 21st century. We had the Chipotle situation that made Treble Cove Plaza a household name throughout the commonwealth. Our orchestra and choir departed for Disney and our DECA students invaded Boston. The Robotics team opened their season in Reading while the Cheerleaders completed theirs in Wachusett. We also hosted a blood drive and the MIAA tournament. We distributed Progress Reports and hosted parent conferences. Although the last of our students won't be returning to Billerica until as late as 11:00 p.m., they will do so with a lifetime of stories to share and some impressive hardware in tow.
What Does DECA stand for anyway?
It used to stand for Distributive Education Clubs of America, but now it is a standalone trademark. The organization allows students from across the country to learn and demonstrate the same skills that are employed in the world of business and finance. Billerica is home to one of the most successful DECA programs in the state and nation. Mr. Magliozzi and Mrs. Lydon mentor our students as they compete in categories that range from marketing to hospitality and research to community service. Our students identify projects early in the school year and work with their peers to refine their proposals and their presentation skills as they advance from the local to state competition. Students that finish in the top three for their category advance to the Nationals, this year being held Nashville, Tennessee. Billerica has maintained a terrific run over the last decade winning a national championship "bringing home glass" each year. We will be sending 38 students to Nashville and they will be leaving on April 23, 2016.
The Happiest Place on Earth
I realize it might be a bit of a stretch to say I am speaking about BMHS, so I won't. Our Orchestra and Choir spent the last four days at Walt Disney World in Florida competing in the 2016 Festival Disney. Our orchestra received an Excellent rating during their adjudication and our Women's Choir and Chamber Singers each received a Superior Rating, the highest score possible.
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Team 4909 opened up the robotics season this past weekend at Reading Memorial High School. This year's competition, entitled Stronghold, combines various components from past competitions in an effort to design a robot that will overthrow their opponent's castle. Team 4909, the Billerica Bionics finished the competition in 10th place and made it to the Alliance Round before bowing out in the quarterfinals. The team won the Engineering Inspiration Award guaranteeing them a place in the New England Regionals in Connecticut. The team will be competing at UNH in two weeks. If you would like to follow Team 4909 during competitions you can download the FRC Spyder app for Android and IOS.
