Billerica Memorial HS Winter Percussion
Our Winter Percussion team will be taking their undefeated record to the New England Percussion Championships being held at Dartmouth High School this Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. Our musicians have racked up wins at King Philip Regional High School, Somerset Berkley, and Shepherd Hill Regional High School. They have improved their performance at each competition and are working on surpassing the 90th percentile. They will be competing in the Percussion Scholastic Concert A Class and will be competing against Chicopee High School and Dedham High School. I wish them the best, but I am certain they do not need it.
Sophomore Semi Formal
Members of the Class of 2016 enjoy the Ed James Gymnasium in a manner it has been unaccustomed to over the last three decades. Mrs. Tewksbury and Mrs. Schrader planned for months and their preparation paid off as students commented on the look and feel of the gym. There was plenty of food (pizza, chicken bites, sandwiches, pasta salad), water and dancing. I'm always amazed that some songs never fade away (YMCA and Don't Stop Believin'). We can let the debate commence on whether they should or should not.
FIRST Robotics
Our Robotics Team 4909, Billerica Bionics, competed at the Northeast Regional at UNH this past weekend. The team placed 3rd out of 40 teams and set the high score for the weekend event, amassing 167 points in their first semi final matchup against the eventual championship team. In a very short period of time, our students have catapulted themselves into the top tier of teams competing in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). They have already qualified for the New England Championship in Hartford, Connecticut by virtue of their winning the District Engineering Inspiration Award at the North Shore event at Reading High School on March 13. The team will learn April 9 if they have earned a spot to compete at the New Englands and an eventual return to the World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.
Next Generation MCAS Update
English language arts and math standards review panel: As
ESE builds the next-generation MCAS, the agency is reviewing the English
language arts and math standards. Last month, K-12 educators and higher
education faculty participated in the first of a series of work sessions to
review current and previous English language arts and math learning standards.
Participants include 24 educators from Eastern Massachusetts, 12 from Central
Massachusetts, and 5 from the western part of the state. This group will
continue to meet until the end of the summer.
The Department will continue to solicit feedback from a
wider range of educators, parents, and the broader public through an online survey through the end of May 2016. This feedback will be shared with the
educators on the review panel. (source: DESE March 25, 2016)

Billerica Blast
As we begin the spring season students look forward to the warmer weather and seniors begin the countdown to the end of their public school experience. They anticipate all the senior activities including Class Day, the Prom, Graduation, and, of course The Blast! They will never truly appreciate all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes all year to make sure their night is safe and memorable. The Blast is a unique event that relies on parent volunteers. If you are a parent whose child is NOT graduating this year, please consider helping the Blast Committee make sure this year's event continues the great tradition of our post graduation celebration. The next meeting takes place tonight, March 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the BMHS Library. If you cannot make the meeting but would like to help out, please contact Patricia Faria pfaria@billericak12.com or Karen Swanson krobb@mitre.org
