At the conclusion of each term, we ask teachers to recognize students that have demonstrated a commitment to their academic success. Some students have maintained their success from the prior term, while some students have shown marked improvement. The assembly will take place on Friday during Advisory. The list of recognized students will appear in this blog and the Billerica MinuteMan next week.

Career Exploration Day at BMHS

The Guidance Department is hosting Career Exploration Day on February 10th from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Mrs. Coia and Ms. Luciano are spearheading the Career Exploration Day Committee, and they have outdone themselves this year with recruiting fantastic participants for our students' benefit.  Please see below for the wonderful opportunities that are available to our students. This event is for all students in grades 9-12. Teachers will also be promoting their department's elective courses that align with these career pathways.  The goal is that students will learn about new and exciting careers, and then learn what elective choices may facilitate exploration in their field of interest.

This Week at BMHS January 25-30, 2016

Midterms

Midterm exams will be continuing this week through Wednesday. The forecast is working in our favor at the moment as there does not appear to be a snow occurrence in our immediate future. However, since this is New England (and things could change at any moment), please remember that if school is cancelled, the exams that would have occurred on the missed day will take place the next day we return to school. Just a reminder if your child will be absent on the day of an exam, please contact their House Office before 8 a.m.

ALICE

On Wednesday, February 3, BMHS will be participating in our first ALICE drill that involves our students. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. In the past, we have practiced different variations of lockdowns (e.g. lockdown, Shelter-in-Place). However, based upon the feedback from the Department of Justice, FBI, and other first responders, ALICE was developed to provide staff and students involved in incidents of this type with options. Our staff has gone through multiple practice sessions and we are ready to begin the rollout with our students. We will be hosting assemblies with each of the classes beginning on Friday of this week and concluding on Tuesday, the day before the drill. This exercise is not intended to be a surprise, so we will be informing students prior to and throughout the exercise. Our exercise will be done in partnership with the Billerica Police and Fire Departments. The high school will be the first school in the district to participate with the rest of the schools completing the exercise in the spring. As you might imagine, these drills will look different at each of the schools (high school, middle school, elementary). The Superintendent will be sending home a letter describing the district exercises. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Amanuensis maintains Excellence

The 2015 issue of the BMHS literary magazine, Amanuensis, was awarded the rank of "Excellent" by the NCTE for the fourth year in a row. BMHS is one of the only schools in the state to earn this distinction for four consecutive years. Only three schools in the state ranked higher than BMHS in the 2015 award cycle.

The hardworking staff of the 2015 issue included: Ambika Rattan, Keri Bruso, Alexis Sorenson, Drew Laundry, Dawn Moore, and Donna Park.

AP Chemistry students visit E-Ink

Mr. Vigeant and his AP Chemistry students took time this afternoon to visit E Ink's US Headquarters located in Technology Park, Billerica. The students learned about the chemistry of e ink and the history of the company. Started in 1997 as a spin off from MIT's Media Lab, E Ink is the world leader in electronic paper displays. Their idea of creating electronic paper that had the same contrast and appearance as print, revolutionized the market. Their technology is used in Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Samsung, and Sony to name a few. Our students were provided the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the science behind the process.

BMHS Pep Band

A group of students, led by junior Adam Alves, has banded together to demonstrate their school spirit by performing at our home basketball games through the end of the season. The BMHS Pep Band began performing during our home basketball games last week and has been a positive addition to the atmosphere in the gym (we are also undefeated during their performances).

Midterm Exam Schedule 2016

On Thursday, January 21 there will be an extended Advisory schedule for the Cell's Out Rally. Midterm week will begin Friday, January 22. During midterms, busses will run during their normal pick up times and again at the end of the exams (11:30 a.m.). Students that do not have an exam are not required to be in school. However, if they arrive during a time when they do not have an exam, we have designated areas (cafeteria, Innovation Cafe) they may use to prepare for their upcoming exam(s). If your child is going to be absent on the day of an exam, please call their Assistant Principal's office before 8 a.m.

 

Community Service Opportunities for BMHS Students

The Bay Circuit Trail is a 230 mile nearly continuous trail; Tewksbury and Billerica are its biggest gap. The Bay Circuit Alliance, of which Billerica is a member, coordinates trail projects in partnership with the Appalachian Mountain Club: http://www.baycircuit.org/volunteer/. This may not seem the best time for the actual work, but it is the perfect time to start planning!

For the less outdoorsy student, the Middlesex Canal Association would gladly receive / offer 20 hours of community service at their museum in Billerica at 71 Faulkner Street: A receptionist to welcome visitors and ask them to sign in, and some administrative tasks like data-entrees  and such. The museum operates a docent program manned by committed Board Directors on Saturdays and Sundays, noon – 4 PM. Program at BMHS to raise awareness on opioid epidemic

BILLERICA

The Billerica Substance Abuse Prevention committee presents If Only - The Movie, Wednesday, Jan. 13 at Billerica Memorial High School. The movie, from the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation and produced by Jim Wahlberg, raises awareness about the prescription drug abuse and opioid addiction epidemic.

If Only is a short film produced to encourage teens, parents and communities to engage in a productive dialog about the dangers of prescription drug misuse and addiction.

The program runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The following is the schedule for the evening: 6:30-7 p.m. is resources and Hidden In Plain Sight, an awareness program for parents only. James Wahlberg will introduce the movie at 7 p.m. with the beginning at 7:10 p.m. A panel discussion will follow the movie at 7:45, concluding at 8:30 p.m.

Parents are encouraged to attend with their children. The event is free and will be held in the auditorium at Billerica Memorial High School.
