Town Meeting
Town Meeting will open this Tuesday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Buck Auditorium. The BMHS Choir under the direction of Megan Bergeron will once again be opening the spring session. In keeping with tradition, we will be introducing the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the Class of 2016. Lawrence Tang earned the rank of Valedictorian while his twin brother Eric earned the rank of Salutatorian. The Town Moderator is beginning a new tradition of recognizing state title winners at the opening of the spring session. BMHS will be represented by Senior Christopher Derosa, who captured the 120 pound state wrestling championship. The Board of Selectmen will also be honoring Senior Robert Maynard for his involvement and significant impact on the BMHS Building Committee. Robert was recognized by the Massachusetts School Building Authority on multiple occasions for his insight and dedication to this historical project.
Reverse Order
BMHS Senior Kierra Walsh, founder of Fan Girl Music
Enterprises: a service organization to aid up-and-coming artists as well as the
community has helped bring Reverse Order, a dynamic alternative rock band from
New Jersey, to BMHS. Their anti-bullying concert/assembly Reverse the Trend was created by the band to help combat the rise
of bullying across the country. The band starts the program by performing a few
songs to engage the students before continuing the assembly by sharing individual
stories of how they were bullied, and how they have overcame it in a safe and
productive way.
BMHS Building Committee
The next Building Committee meeting is tonight at 6:00 p.m. at the Parker Elementary School. The major component is the update on the Owner's Project Manager selection. The company conducting the geotechnical work (Lahlaf Geotechnical) has been on site since last Thursday conducting test pits and borings. The first phase of the work began in the back of the building, but the work will move to the side and front of the building over the next two days. The purpose of this phase is to identify the composition of the soils to prepare for the footings and proper foundation of the new building. All of the work conducted during this phase is repaired immediately and usable for our students within 24 hours. As you might imagine when people see a backhoe show up on the property they begin asking when they will be breaking ground. The target date to "break ground" is for next spring. The exact date will be dependent on the upcoming winter.
Junior Prom
The Junior Prom took place this past Friday, April 29 at Atkinson Country Club. Each prom is unique and the venue and disc jockey can play a significant role in the success/student enjoyment of the event. Both seemed to live up to the students' expectations as they were still on the dance floor until the last song. I requested Stairway to Heaven since it ended so many of my school dances, but the students said they never heard of it, or Led Zeppelin (my only complaint with how we might be raising our children). The Class of 2017 (along with some guests from other classes) represented the high school and town of Billerica with class. We received so many compliments from Atkinson personnel, inclusive of the event planners, staff, and Atkinson Police. I will be sharing this with our students, but feel free to reinforce this to your child if they were in attendance.
Advanced Placement Exams
2016 Advanced Placement Schedule |
Monday, May 2 begins the annual two-week examination schedule for the A.P. courses offered at BMHS. Our students will be participating in 20 different A.P. exams with a cumulative total of 489 exams.
Student of the Term
Last Friday we recognized our Student of the Term recipients. These students were selected by their teachers for their commitment and dedication in the classroom. This level of success can be determined by a student's consistent performance over the year, or significant improvement from the last quarter. The students' names were sent to the local newspapers and will be added to this site tomorrow.
Billerica Blast 2016
The Billerica Blast 2016 Committee is hosting a fundraiser for this year's Graduating Class. The event will take place on Thursday, May 5 beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Bennett Library and feature a variety of games to enjoy. Admission is $10 and all funds raised go directly to the Blast, which provides our graduates a safe, substance free night to enjoy with the classmates. Any questions about this event, or others way to help can be directed to Karen Swanson krobbswanson@comcast.net or Kathy Van Kuilenburg k.vankuilenburg@comcast.net
