This Week at BMHS March 28 - April 2, 2016

Billerica Memorial HS Winter Percussion

Our Winter Percussion team will be taking their undefeated record to the New England Percussion Championships being held at Dartmouth High School this Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. Our musicians have racked up wins at King Philip Regional High School, Somerset Berkley, and Shepherd Hill Regional High School. They have improved their performance at each competition and are working on surpassing the 90th percentile. They will be competing in the Percussion Scholastic Concert A Class and will be competing against Chicopee High School and Dedham High School. I wish them the best, but I am certain they do not need it.

Sophomore Semi Formal

Members of the Class of 2016 enjoy the Ed James Gymnasium in a manner it has been unaccustomed to over the last three decades. Mrs. Tewksbury and Mrs. Schrader planned for months and their preparation paid off as students commented on the look and feel of the gym. There was plenty of food (pizza, chicken bites, sandwiches, pasta salad), water and dancing. I'm always amazed that some songs never fade away (YMCA and Don't Stop Believin'). We can let the debate commence on whether they should or should not.

FIRST Robotics

Our Robotics Team 4909, Billerica Bionics, competed at the Northeast Regional at UNH this past weekend. The team placed 3rd out of 40 teams and set the high score for the weekend event, amassing 167 points in their first semi final matchup against the eventual championship team. In a very short period of time, our students have catapulted themselves into the top tier of teams competing in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). They have already qualified for the New England Championship in Hartford, Connecticut by virtue of their winning the District Engineering Inspiration Award at the North Shore event at Reading High School on March 13. The team will learn April 9 if they have earned a spot to compete at the New Englands and an eventual return to the World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.

Next Generation MCAS Update

English language arts and math standards review panel: As ESE builds the next-generation MCAS, the agency is reviewing the English language arts and math standards. Last month, K-12 educators and higher education faculty participated in the first of a series of work sessions to review current and previous English language arts and math learning standards. Participants include 24 educators from Eastern Massachusetts, 12 from Central Massachusetts, and 5 from the western part of the state. This group will continue to meet until the end of the summer.

The Department will continue to solicit feedback from a wider range of educators, parents, and the broader public through an online survey through the end of May 2016. This feedback will be shared with the educators on the review panel. (source: DESE March 25, 2016)

Billerica Blast

As we begin the spring season students look forward to the warmer weather and seniors begin the countdown to the end of their public school experience. They anticipate all the senior activities including Class Day, the Prom, Graduation, and, of course The Blast! They will never truly appreciate all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes all year to make sure their night is safe and memorable. The Blast is a unique event that relies on parent volunteers. If you are a parent whose child is NOT graduating this year, please consider helping the Blast Committee make sure this year's event continues the great tradition of our post graduation celebration. The next meeting takes place tonight, March 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the BMHS Library. If you cannot make the meeting but would like to help out, please contact Patricia Faria pfaria@billericak12.com or Karen Swanson krobb@mitre.org

    This Week at BMHS - Monday, March 21 - 28, 2016

      MCAS

The MCAS assessments will begin this Tuesday, March 22 for all our sophomores (regardless of whether school is cancelled on Monday). The sophomores will be testing for their ELA (English Language Arts) competency. The first day (Tuesday) the students will be completing the Composition portion of the exam, while Wednesday and Thursday they will be assessed in grammar, writing, reading and additional conventions of the language. This is their first opportunity to meet the ELA Graduation requirement for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They will be assessed in the MCAS math competency in May.  We met with the sophomore class on Friday to talk about the importance of the assessment in relation to our school and their future post secondary plans. I am asking for your assistance as well. Over the next week during the MCAS assessment, please talk with your child/ren about the importance of doing well on the assessment. The MCAS assessment can benefit them personally through the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship as well as the school and community. We speak to our students about the importance of the SAT, ACT , and AP exams because of the personal impact it has on their college application. The MCAS assessment impacts them as well as it is the most public arbiter of school performance.  Whenever our students compete, whether on the field, court, gym, or in the classroom, we expect them to give their best. We have been rewarded with scholarships, state and conference titles, TAMY, engineering, AMC, and science awards. The MCAS should be thought of in the same manner. It is an opportunity for our students to demonstrate their mastery of the state's standards in ELA, math and science. Although it is only one indicator, I believe we should be trying our best with every indicator, inclusive of the MCAS. Please encourage them to do their best over the next few days.

The Department of Education has changed the requirements to receive a John and Abigail Adams Scholarship for graduates beginning this year.

Beginning with the class of 2016, in order to be eligible for the scholarship,
      • students must score at the Advanced performance level on one of the three high school state assessment tests in ELA, Mathematics, or STE (Biology, Chemistry, Introductory Physics, or Technology/Engineering);
      •  and score at the Proficient level or higher on the remaining two high school state assessment tests;
      • and have combined scores from the three tests that place them in the top 25 percent of students in the graduating class in their district.

Scholarship eligibility is based on each student's first attempt at taking the spring grade 10 MCAS tests in ELA and Mathematics (and for students in the class of 2016 and beyond, first attempt at taking one of the four STE tests). In order to receive the scholarship, a student must be enrolled in a Massachusetts public high school in his or her senior year. Students who qualify for the scholarship will receive award letters and further information in the fall of their senior year.

A Big Thank You to the those though that put a Pep in our step this winter

This past winter we were fortunate to start a new tradition at BMHS with the addition of a Pep Band during our home basketball games. Junior Adam Alves organized a terrific collection of musicians that provided a supportive beat to our boys' and girls' basketball games at the Ed James Gymnasium. We believe in an inclusive environment and adding music to our athletic events is a very natural fit. The Pep Band received so many compliments throughout the season from our own parents to visiting team parents to game officials. We are all looking forward to next season and the continued growth of our Pep Band.

      National Honor Society

Last Tuesday night the BMHS Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted its newest class. One hundred and eight members of the Class of 2016 and 2017 took the oath having met the criteria of the four pillars of NHS; Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.

      DECA

Our DECA students traveled to the Boston Marriott last weekend hoping to continue their success at the national stage this April. Mr. Magliozzi and Mrs. Lydon and the rest of the Business Department prepared our students over the course of the last five months. When the awards were announced Saturday morning, BMHS had 38 students qualify for the Nationals in Nashville, Tennessee. Nicholas Glasser, Jacob Hulsoor, Gregory Westcott, Cameryn Brothers, Victoria Bones, Kelsey Johnson, Melissa Johnson, Chris Looney, Brendan Murphy, Joseph Hodgkins, Marc Ashman, Matt Ternullo, Daniel Canniff, Ryan Stack, Ryan Cahill, Adam Lennerton, Dylan Coppinger, Shaun McAvoy, Aiden McCarthy, Daniel Trask, Alexandra Whalen, Nicholas Scuccimarra, Brittany Papa, Lauren Sullivan, Daniel LoGuidice, Brendan Maloney, Ciara Lydon, Ethan Hadley, Ryan Jackson are heading to Nashville to continue the tradition of winning National Titles. The BMHS DECA program has won 8 National Titles over the last 8 years and they will be looking to continue the tradition of winning "glass." - (so named because the national titles are glass obelisks.)

      BMHS Construction

Since the election on March 5 and the approval of the debt exclusion there have been many questions regarding construction and the impact on BMHS over the next few years. I have received a couple of emails from parents asking if we have already started the demolition part of the project. Since this will not take place until 2019, I thought it would be a good idea to share some information with you and let you know where you can get updates to the project and the potential impact it will have on BMHS and your child/ren over the next three years. First, I have added a tab on the Aspen page entitled BMHS Construction. This is available to anyone that has an Aspen log in. There will also be a public page from the Building Committee, but this page will provide internal updates for people directly impacted by the project (staff, students, and parents). The BMHS Construction tab includes some current architectural pictures as well as the BMHS Building Committee Calendar and Twitter feed. If you have any difficulty viewing this tab, please let us know. The construction firm has been selected and we are currently working on the contract. The construction firm is Shawmut Construction and they have recently completed the UMASS Lowell Crossing project as well as Wayland High School.

Shawmut Construction is scheduled to be at our next Building Committee meeting on March 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Hall Auditorium. As soon as Shawmut develops the timeline for the project, we will be meeting with the students to convey the potential impact it will have on the school and them over the next 3 years.

This Week at BMHS - Monday, March 14 - Sunday, March 20, 2016

          The Week That Was

There are moments during the school year that cause you to reflect and ask, "Did all that really happen?" Last week was one of those weeks. We were a part of history as the town voted to erect a new BMHS that will take us well into the 21st century. We had the Chipotle situation that made Treble Cove Plaza a household name throughout the commonwealth. Our orchestra and choir departed for Disney and our DECA students invaded Boston. The Robotics team opened their season in Reading while the Cheerleaders completed theirs in Wachusett. We also hosted a blood drive and the MIAA tournament. We distributed Progress Reports and hosted parent conferences. Although the last of our students won't be returning to Billerica until as late as 11:00 p.m., they will do so with a lifetime of stories to share and some impressive hardware in tow.

What Does DECA stand for anyway?

It used to stand for Distributive Education Clubs of America, but now it is a standalone trademark. The organization allows students from across the country to learn and demonstrate the same skills that are employed in the world of business and finance. Billerica is home to one of the most successful DECA programs in the state and nation. Mr. Magliozzi and Mrs. Lydon mentor our students as they compete in categories that range from marketing to hospitality and research to community service. Our students identify projects early in the school year and work with their peers to refine their proposals and their presentation skills as they advance from the local to state competition. Students that finish in the top three for their category advance to the Nationals, this year being held Nashville, Tennessee. Billerica has maintained a terrific run over the last decade winning a national championship "bringing home glass" each year. We will be sending 38 students to Nashville and they will be leaving on April 23, 2016.

          The Happiest Place on Earth

I realize it might be a bit of a stretch to say I am speaking about BMHS, so I won't. Our Orchestra and Choir spent the last four days at Walt Disney World in Florida competing in the 2016 Festival Disney. Our orchestra received an Excellent rating during their adjudication and our Women's Choir and Chamber Singers each received a Superior Rating, the highest score possible.

          Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto

Team 4909 opened up the robotics season this past weekend at Reading Memorial High School. This year's competition, entitled Stronghold, combines various components from past competitions in an effort to design a robot that will overthrow their opponent's castle. Team 4909, the Billerica Bionics finished the competition in 10th place and made it to the Alliance Round before bowing out in the quarterfinals. The team won the Engineering Inspiration Award guaranteeing them a place in the New England Regionals in Connecticut. The team will be competing at UNH in two weeks. If you would like to follow Team 4909 during competitions you can download the FRC Spyder app for Android and IOS.

          College Fair

We will be hosting our college fair this Wednesday evening in the Ed James Gym. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. and conclude at 8:00 p.m. We have over 80 colleges and universities scheduled to attend. This event is open to all students and their families.

8th Grade Program of Studies Night

We will be welcoming 8th grade students and parents on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the BMHS Auditorium to discuss the 2016-2017 Program of Studies for incoming freshmen. The presentation will run approximately 60 minutes and provide plenty of time for parents and students to attend the college fair.

          National Honor Society

This Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. we will be hosting our annual induction to the National Honor Society. This year's class numbers 107. These students have maintained a 90% cumulative average over their course of study as well as demonstrated a commitment to personal character, community service, and leadership.

Teachers Going Above and Beyond to Help Our Students

Billerica teachers honored for 'immense' impact on students
            By Rick Sobey, rsobey@lowellsun.com
            UPDATED:   03/08/2016 07:15:30 AM EST

Honored teachers, from left, standing with The Burlington TTC Verizon store manager Jeff Madigan, are English teacher Brian Caldwell; paraprofessional Joanne Sprague; English teacher Steve Gleason; tutor Sue Jacobs; Megan Lulsdorf accepting for math teacher Linda McLaughlin; English teacher Stacia Bujnowski; math teacher Catie Hurd; and Billerica TCC Verizon store manager Kenny Ogden.Seated, from left, are math teacher Brian Carroll; English teacher Shawn Landry; business teacher John Magliozzi; and chemistry teacher Paul Vigeant. BILLERICA -- Brianna Maillet was on the verge of dropping out of high school.
After getting pregnant during her senior year at Billerica Memorial High School, she attended night school and was forced to stay back a year. Then, following her son's birth, Maillet was worried she would miss too much school and have to stay back again.
But a Billerica teacher stepped up to the plate.
English teacher Steve Gleason offered to tutor Maillet at her house, at no extra pay, to help her graduate. Gleason went out of his way for a student he never knew and helped her graduate in 2010. Maillet is now completing her degree to become a registered nurse.
The efforts of teachers like Gleason sometimes go unrecognized, but last week, Gleason and several other Billerica Memorial High School teachers were honored for making a significant impact on students' lives.
The Cellular Connection (TCC) Billerica Verizon store honored 10 teachers, including Gleason, who were nominated by former students. The company donated 10 boxes full of school supplies to these teachers during a school assembly on Wednesday.
In addition, students in attendance nominated 10 other teachers who received school supplies.
"I feel that I'm just one of a multitude of staff here that help kids out," Gleason said. "We care deeply about them, and will go the distance to help out.
"To know another kid is moving forward is what it's all about," he added. "It's the best part of doing this profession."
Kenny Ogden, the Verizon store manager and Ambassador of Good for the New England market, presented the school supplies to the teachers.
Ogden, who graduated from Billerica Memorial High School in 2010, recently asked his former classmates on social media, "What teacher made the biggest impact on your life?"
The results were overwhelming, he said.
"My phone went off for hours on end and late into the night, but one thing was clear: These teachers went above and beyond the title of teacher to make such an impact in many peoples' lives," Ogden said.
The school supplies -- index cards, colored pencils, markers, paper, glue sticks and more -- went to the following teachers: Gleason, Paul Vigeant, Linda McLaughlin, Stacia Bujnowski, John Magliozzi, Sue Jacobs, Shawn Landry, Joanne Sprague, Brian Caldwell and Brian Carroll.
The students in attendance on Wednesday also nominated these teachers: Catie Hurd, Joel Dure, Lori Reubenstein, Amanda Hillson, Jeff Bernoth, Catie Button, Jan Mounsey, Megan Bergeron, Jeff Gage and Pat Ammendolia.
"This is a special occasion for Billerica Memorial High School," said Assistant Principal Debbie Biagiotti. "Teachers' efforts go unrecognized at times, so we're honoring teachers who have contributed immensely and made tremendous impacts in students' lives.
"Thank you (teachers) for everything you do on a daily basis," she added.

            This Week at BMHS - Monday, March 7 - March 13, 2016

            The Vote is In

I am confident that everyone is aware of the historic vote this past Saturday. The coverage of the event through social media, newspapers and radio made it very difficult to miss the message that the Billerica community sent to the state regarding our commitment to the education of our children. I have been inundated with well wishes throughout the weekend, ranging from current students' parents to future students' parents. I have also been contacted by so many alumni that called BMHS home from the 1950s through the 2000s. It never ceases to amaze me that no matter where people may be in their current lives, they keep abreast of what is going on their hometown and exude a sense of pride in its accomplishments.

Naturally, the next part of the conversation will turn to the timeline and impact on our teachers and students. There have been a number of planning conversations, but without the voter approval and hiring of a construction team, most questions could not be answered. We have taken care of the first part (voter approval) and will complete the second part (hiring of a construction team) this Tuesday night at our next Building Committee meeting. We will be meeting with our faculty this Tuesday afternoon to address questions as we begin to map out our timeline for impact at our current location. We will also be meeting with our current students over the next two weeks to answer questions and review the timeline of potential impacts over the next three years. As you might imagine the impact for our current seniors will be vastly different than our current freshmen.

Although we are very excited about the next steps, we are cognizant of the potential impacts of building on our current site while school is in session. Also, we need to take care of our current building and our students that will be with us for the next three years. I assure you that they will not be overlooked and I will not let our building suffer as we prepare to say goodbye to a place that has served us well for so many years.

            Parent Conferences

We will be hosting the spring parent conference on Thursday, March 10 from 6 - 8 p.m. We will once again be using the PTC Wizard program for scheduling purposes. The window for selecting conferences will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3. We will send out a link prior to March 3, allowing you to set up an account. If you have already completed that process for the fall conferences, you will only need to select appointments for this conference.

PTC Wizard This link will take you to the PTC site for Billerica.

Each conference is only 5 minutes in length. If you are unable to schedule a time to meet with your child's teacher, please email them directly at firstinitiallastname@billericak12.com

Please follow this link for a listing of the staff directory BMHS Staff Directory

We have included floor plans for the building in an effort to assist your scheduling of conferences. For those of you that may be new to the building, I would like to provide some guidance.

            • Rooms that begin with a 1 are located in the Memorial Building (Original building adjacent to River Street)
            • Rooms that begin with a 3 are located in the New Addition (the main entrance is directly in front of you as you enter down Tom Glavine Way)

What makes me smile on a Friday afternoon?

                  Good Afternoon Tom,

I wanted to share something with you before the weekend regarding some excellent student behavior and acceptance of others.  One of my compass students participates in Mr. Peterson's World of Foods class.  This particular student struggles with staying on task, demonstrating appropriate social skills, and managing their emotions.  My student works with 4 other students (ranging in grade levels) at their table.  These 4 students have been incredible peers.  They include my student in discussions and activities, understand the challenges encountered, and assists with questions  about the class content.  They do all of this without hesitation and without being prompted to do so.  I'm not quite sure if there's anything we could do to officially recognize these 4 students, but regardless, I wanted to make you aware of it, as it is exactly what BMHS is all about.  The 4 students names are John Zero, Jessica Walton, Briana Meyers and Brian Sullivan.

I was able to personally thank these students before the end of the day and call their parents to simply say thank you. These four students represent the best of us, providing an ideal that we want all of our students to aspire.
